Manananggals are viewed as terrifying because legend has it, they slay people. But this manananggal doll isn’t—instead, she’s a total slay.
Last week, American multinational toy manufacturing company Mattel unveiled its newest Monster High doll named Corazon Marikit, which has taken inspiration from the Philippine mythical creature manananggal.
According to Mattel’s official website, the doll is “a feast of Filipino fashion and traditions, this manananggal maven is said to be able to separate her top and bottom halves to fly into the night. A vision in foil print and fringe, along with beautifully embroidered batwings, Corazon Marikit saunters down a runway of jasmine, leaving her fangs screaming for more.”
True enough, Corazon Marikit’s appearance showcases the rich Filipino culture. The Manananggal maven is dressed in a traditional pink and red terno, holding a rattan bag and embroidered fan while sporting some cute accessories and a pair of Bahay Kubo-inspired heels.
To complete the doll’s ensemble, Corazon Marikit also has embroidered wings and vampire-like fangs. And just like an actual manananggal, the doll’s body splits in half.
Filipino fans of Monster High raved about Corazon Marikit and the attention to detail the creators put to showcase Filipino fashion and traditions.
This isn’t the first time Mattel has created a doll that highlights Filipino heritage. As part of their Barbie Signature line, the company launched a Mutya Barbie in 2015 and a Filipina Barbie in 2024—both designed by Filipino-American doll designer Carlyle Nuera.
