When it comes to holiday icons, one can never forget the jolly hare of Easter, known as the Easter Bunny.

Popularized back in 1682 by German doctor Johannes Richier, the Easter Bunny was described as an ‘Osterhase’ (Easter Hare) that laid multi-colored eggs for children to find hidden in their homes and gardens.

Initially, Richier wrote about the Easter Bunny in his medical essay to serve as a public health warning for people practicing ‘Easter egg hunting’ in upper Germany. According to The Royal Society’s documented translation of his dissertation, Richier wrote, “‘The young people often lose their health with these Easter eggs because they avidly swallow up the eggs without salt, butter or any other flavouring” — which in turn, causes them stomach pains.

Despite Richier’s warning, a lot of people were still drawn by the concept of a mystical rabbit bringing joy to adults and children alike with an exciting egg hunt. So, the legend spread beyond Germany.

Today, the Easter Bunny is esteemed in the minds and hearts of past and current generations.
